Czech Republic 1 January 2009 has become the new chairman of the European Union. Chairmanship of the country, the first of the Eastern European States, which is entrusted with leadership of the European Union, will last six months.
Note that the Czech Republic, along with Ireland are the only EU members that have yet to ratify the so-called Lisbon Treaty, or a new draft European constitution. In Ireland, the Lisbon Treaty was rejected by residents in a referendum, but the Czech authorities have ordered to postpone the vote on the draft EU constitution in February 2009 (in this country, the fate of the treaty will be decided in the parliament).
