More than 50 people were killed in Papua - New Guinea over the past few months because of suspicions that they were engaged in black magic. This, according to The Times, say human rights organizations.
Most of those killed, according to the newspaper, - women suspected of witchcraft. Usually they Lynch mob, but sometimes people are satisfied with some semblance of a court. Suspected of being witches are burned, clog with stones, grass and hang. The authorities can not stop the violence. However, the Government established a commission to find ways to end the hunt for witches.
Such cases are in the country before, but last year they increased. The situation is particularly severe in the mountainous area, the residents of some parts of which first came into contact with Western culture only 70 years ago.
Often, victims of a witch-hunt are women who live with men from another tribe, where there are no relatives who could protect them. In addition, relatives of the deceased from the unclear reasons, people such as cancer, looking for witches to be responsible for their deaths.
