He will head a coalition government, which will include both opponents, and supporters of President Robert Mugabe.
Two policies have reached agreement on the need of forming a coalition cabinet as early as September 2008, but power-sharing process was delayed due to the fact that the opponents could not agree on who to appoint to the main office in the State.
It was expected that the entry into office of prime minister Tsvangirai must put an end to protracted political standoff in Zimbabwe. The crisis began after the parliamentary and presidential elections held in March 2008. Supporters of Tsvangirai announced that he and his Movement for Democratic Change won and on those, and others.
Nevertheless, supporters of Mugabe, head of the country since 1980, said that in the presidential election was not a decisive advantage, and declared the second round. Tsvangirai initially said that he would join in them, but later withdrew his candidacy due to pressure authorities to the opposition (however, the electoral commission has not obliterate it from the ballot papers). In the absence of rival Mugabe won, and then, as a result of negotiations, it was announced that Tsvangirai would take the post of prime minister.
