At the election of the President of Macedonia defeated Georgi Ivanov.

Victory in the second round of the election of the president of Macedonia, won-right candidate of the ruling bloc Georgi Ivanov, AFP reported with reference to the CEC of the country.

Ivanov, according to the processing of ballots from 96 percent of polling stations, won 63.41 percent of votes. His opponent - the representative of the opposition Social Democratic Party Lyubomyr Frchkosky (Ljubomir Frckoski) - received only 36.56 percent of votes. Frchkosky already admitted defeat.

Turnout in the second round of the election of the president of Macedonia, held on April 5, was 42 percent. To ensure that the elections were declared valid, the polls were to arrive at least 40 percent of voters included in the list.

Representatives of the CEC of Macedonia stated that the elections were held in a "quiet and peaceful atmosphere," reports of serious irregularities were reported.
In June 2008, during the parliamentary elections in Macedonia have been clashes in the regions inhabited by Albanians. The presidential election of 2009 as a candidate, supported by ethnic Albanians, has not passed the second round. Most voters Albanians on 5 April at the polling stations did not come.

One of the pre-program Georgy Ivanov recalled AFP, was the promise to resolve the dispute with Greece over the name of the country. Greece, dissatisfied that the former Yugoslav republic is named the same as a northern Greek province, hinders the process of accession of Macedonia to NATO and the EU.
Another obstacle to the integration of Macedonia into the EU were rioting during the parliamentary elections of 2008, so the successful holding of presidential elections was seen in the country and beyond its borders as a test of readiness for accession to the EU.
