In the parliamentary election in Iceland defeated left.

Icelandic Independence Party for the first time in 18 years, lost the parliamentary elections, gaining the least number of votes for all time in its history, said in Sunday, April 26, AFP.

According to preliminary data processing of the ballots cast in elections held on 25 April, the Independence Party, won 22.9 percent of votes. Social Democratic Party of Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir got 31.6 percent votes, while its coalition partner - the green movement - 20.5 per cent of the vote. Thus, the left block for the first time in the history of Iceland, will take an absolute majority of seats in parliament.

Living in Iceland, say political analysts, believe the Party of Independence, ruled since the early 1990's, one of the main perpetrators of the economic crisis facing the country.
January 26, the Icelandic government, which was headed by the representative of the Party of Independence Geir Haarde, was forced to resign. The country has been declared early parliamentary elections and formed an interim government headed by Johanna Sigurdardottir.
Iceland was among the countries most affected by global financial crisis. In the second half of 2008 the Icelandic Government was forced to nationalize the three largest banks in the country. GDP in 2008 declined by more than 10 per cent. Iceland was forced to request a loan from the IMF in the amount of 2,1 billion dollars. Financial assistance to Iceland also agreed to provide U.S. and European Union countries.
