The Government of Libya has initiated litigation against the Swiss authorities for the detention in July 2008, younger son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, said BBC News.
Hannibal Qaddafi was arrested along with his wife on July 15 on charges of domestic battery. Two days later, a couple released on bail of 500 thousand Swiss francs (more than 300 thousand euros). Neither the younger Qaddafi, his wife, his guilt is not admitted. After the plaintiffs dropped the charges on Sept. 3, 2008 the case was closed.
According to counsel, family, Gaddafi demands compensation amount of 55 thousand Swiss francs (44 thousand dollars). At the same time, AFP reports that the couple also requires additional material to compensate for damage to 474 thousand Swiss francs (412 thousand dollars).
Swiss Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the situation.
In connection with the arrest of the son of Libyan leader, between Switzerland and Libya broke diplomatic scandal, which has not yet been settled. Libya withdrew from the Swiss part of the diplomats and Libyan police arrested on various charges of two Swiss nationals.
Immediately after the incident, the number of flights between the two countries has been reduced, Libya has stopped issuing visas to Swiss citizens. In addition, a number of Swiss companies in Libya have received instructions to cease their activities. The National Shipping Company, vice-president of which is to Hannibal Gaddafi, has announced the termination of oil supplies in Switzerland.
July 30, the supply was resumed, but in October Muammar Gaddafi said that Libya withdraws from Swiss bank assets of seven billion dollars, and will stop supplies of crude oil.
