EU Council Secretary General Javier Solana on Thursday, February 19, will arrive in Minsk, where he will meet with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, said AFP. Solana said that plans to discuss prospects of cooperation between Belarus and the European Union.
In addition, Solana will meet with Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov, as well as with leaders of the Belarusian opposition, including Alexander Milinkevich, said RIA Novosti.
Thus, the EU would resume contacts with Lukashenko interrupted in March 2006 after the presidential elections in Belarus. Then Lukashenko has accused the EU of violating international electoral standards and pressure on the opposition. After that, the president of Belarus, and several dozen high-ranking officials had been denied entry to the EU.
In November 2008, the ban was temporarily lifted - for a period of six months. Thus the representatives of the European Union have decided to encourage the development of democracy in Belarus. The EU has gone to meet the Belarusian authorities, after been released from prison three opponents: Alexander Kozulin, Sergei Parsyukevich and Andrey Kim. Entry to the EU is still banned only five Belarusian officials, among them - CEC Chairman Lydia Yermoshina.
According to AFP, Alexander Lukashenko said that he agreed to cooperate with the EU, but only on its own terms.
