The influx of Mexican guest workers in the U.S. fell by half.

The number of migrants leaving Mexico in 2008 declined by more than 50 per cent compared to 2007, the Associated Press on 20 February.
Grave situation in the U.S. economy led to a sharp reduction in the number of Mexicans leaving for work abroad. At the same time tended to increase the number of returning Mexicans were recorded.
It is estimated the Mexican National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Information (INEGI), from August 2006 to August 2007, the country legally or illegally to have left 455 thousand Mexicans, but for the same period in 2007-2008 that number dropped to 204 thousand people. In addition, significantly reduced the number of residents who planned to leave the country in the future. At the same time gradually reducing the number of families receiving financial assistance from relatives working abroad - from 1.41 million in 2005 to 1.16 million in 2008, as well as the size of this assistance.
The main causes of these processes is called the economic crisis and job cuts for the guest workers from Mexico, as well as the efforts of American authorities to combat illegal immigration.
