Initially the pirates demanded a vessel for U.S. $ 35 million, but then declined to purchase the amount of three million. Later it was reported that the owner of "Faina" increased the amount of ransom, but specific figures are not known.
The ship was hijacked in Somali waters in September 2008. On board were Soviet tanks T-72, as well as other weapons. In the hands of the pirates were 20 seamen - 17 Ukrainians, two Russians and a citizen of Latvia. The master of the vessel, Vladimir Kolobkov died shortly after capture.
