The decision was unanimously accepted by city council of Paris.

Recall that Shalit has dual citizenship - Israel and France. Earlier, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has taken active steps to rescue Shalit from captivity - in particular, indirectly involving Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Shalit was kidnapped in the Gaza Strip in June 2006. In exchange for his release Hamas demands to release from Israeli prisons 1400 his supporters, and to open crossings at the border with the Gaza Strip.
