The Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez won a landslide victory on Sunday in a referendum on the abolition of restrictions on re-President, reported Agence France-Presse on 16 February.
According to preliminary data, the lifting of restrictions voted 54.36 per cent took part in the referendum favored against 45.63 per cent. Commenting on the outcome of the vote, Chavez said that Venezuela won "the truth and dignity."
Earlier, Chavez has offered to increase the presidential term of office from six to seven years and abolish the restriction on the number of terms. In December 2007 the relevant amendments to the constitution were submitted to a referendum, but voters are not supported.
President Chavez was re-elected for a second term in 2006, and his terms of office expire in 2012.
