Israel released Hamas speaker of the parliament.

Israel released Palestinian parliament speaker from Hamas Dveyka Aziz (Aziz Dweik, or Aziz Duwaik), who was in an Israeli prison for three years, transfer agency AFP.

Dveyk and dozens of Hamas politicians have been arrested in the West Bank in 2006, after Palestinian militants kidnapped on the border with Gaza, Corporal Gilad Shalit.

According to The Jerusalem Post, in the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations for the release of Shalit, who was scheduled to exchange for Palestinian prisoners, Aziz Dveyk considered a key figure of possible exchanges.

Dveyk was one of the most senior Palestinians, who have ever been in an Israeli prison. One time, Hamas considered it as an alternative to Mahmoud Abbas as President of the Palestinian Authority.

The decision to release the 60-year-old Aziz Dveyka of freedom was quite unexpected. According to Reuters, it could be related to the sick Dveyka: during his detention, he repeatedly went to the hospital. Dveyk suffers from hypertension and diabetes.
