He was elected the new Speaker of the House of Commons British Parliament.

Members of the lower chamber of the British Parliament on 22 June selected the new Speaker of 46-year-old conservatives, John Berkou, the British television channel Sky News. During his candidacy gave 322 parliamentarians to vote against the 271 votes received by his opponent, George Young, the representative of the Conservative Party.
To select the speaker needed to conduct three rounds of voting. Berkou and Young took the lead after the first round, gaining 179 and 112 votes respectively. Scored in the first round of 74 representative votes the ruling Labor Party, Margaret Beckett left in the second round of the fight, as well as several other candidates.
By a short speech after the vote, Berkou said that the election of the Speaker of the House of Commons was his "great privilege" in his career. He also noted the need for reforms and expressed confidence that "the absolute majority of the members of the House of Commons - a fair, decent and honorable people" whose interests lie primarily in the performance of civic duty.
Recall the previous Speaker of the House of Commons Michael Martin was forced to resign due to a corruption scandal, which originated with the publication in the newspaper The Daily Telegraph. Reporters found that the British policy of abusing the right to recover their costs from public coffers and spend taxpayers' money on their own needs without any special reason.
As a result of the scandal to resign, except for Martin, went a few influential politicians, including Justice Minister Shahid Malik and Interior Minister Jackie Smith.
The main work of the Speaker of the House of Commons is to debate the management of the lower house of Parliament, in addition to his responsibilities include the appointment of chairmen of committees and a number of other functions. After his election as the Speaker of a politician out of the political party to which he had hitherto been, and is no political party affiliation.
