President Hamid Karzai left Afghanistan after the official end of his term on 21 May, reported Reuters. Afghan President said this on Sunday, March 29, after the Supreme Court authorized the extension of his mandate until August, when the country will be held new elections.
In early March, the election commission has appointed a presidential election in the country on 20 August. In doing so, it acted against the decree of the Karzai, who insisted on holding elections in April. Thus, the Supreme Court should allow the legal conflict, which resulted in a few months, Afghanistan could remain without a legitimate president.
The decision to hold elections in August, it was dictated by considerations of security and weather factor. By law, elections in Afghanistan were to be held in March 2009, but in January it was decided to postpone them for six months due to threats of militants of the Taliban to carry out attacks. In addition, winter and spring in the mountains of Afghanistan is difficult to deliver the ballots.
In January 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama has announced that it is not going to fully support Karzai, and held meetings with several other Afghan politicians. Despite that Karzai, who heads the country since 2002, announced his intention to once again take part in presidential elections.
In the United States believes that the successful holding of democratic elections in Afghanistan, the president will be the main criterion by which to evaluate the effectiveness of U.S. policy towards that country.
