United Kingdom beginning of the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 31, officially launched the procedure for withdrawal of its troops from Iraq, sends BBC News.

Major-General Andri Selmon (Andy Salmon) handed over command of the international contingent in southern Iraq, American generals Oeytsu Michael (Michael Oates).

Most of the 4,000 British troops will leave Iraq before May 31. There remain about 400 people who will train Iraqi soldiers and sailors.

United Kingdom is working with the U.S. military in Iraq since 2003. The area of responsibility of the British sector of the South - the province of Basra and the capital of same name.

In September 2007, the British have already handed over control of Basra to Iraqi security forces, left the city settled on a nearby airfield.

Participation in the Iraq campaign has caused quite contradictory reactions in British society. In London, shares were not just opposing the war, demanding the cessation of military operations.

The war in Iraq has undermined the popularity of Prime Minister Tony Blair, under pressure odnopartiytsev from the Labor Party was forced to resign. The new Prime Gordon Brown came to power in 2007, promised to start withdrawing troops.
