Military Tribunal at the U.S. base in Germany sentenced a U.S. Army Sergeant Joseph Mayo (Joseph P. Mayo) to 35 years in prison for murder in 2007 of four Iraqis who were detained on suspicion of belonging to fighters, said AFP. The court decided that the early release of the convicted person will be possible not earlier than 10 years.
At trial, Mayo fully pleaded guilty to murder and conspiracy to murder. As reported in the media, while serving in Iraq convict sergeant and six soldiers tied up the four detained Iraqis, and put them blindfolded and shot and killed by shots to the head. The killing happened after the militants in an attack on U.S. patrol killed two soldiers.
From the Mayo evidence suggests that in the house where the Iraqis were arrested, were found machine guns, two sniper rifles and ammunition. Since the apparent evidence of Iraqi involvement in the attack was not afraid of the Americans, according to Mayo, that the detainees released, as is often the case.
Summary of the case are seven people. Sergeant Michael Leyhi was sentenced to life imprisonment with possibility of parole in February 2009. In September 2008, a soldier Belmor Ramos was sentenced to seven months in prison for what he knew about the murder and had approved it. Such a light sentence he received in exchange for testimony against other participants in the crime. Terms of less than two years have been American soldiers, one sergeant will appear before the tribunal in April.
