Australia has refined the number of victims of forest fires.

The number of victims of wildfires that occurred in south-eastern Australia in February stood at 173 people, not 210 as previously reported, AFP reported on 30 March. These updates the Australian police.
"We managed to find a large number of people who were previously unaccounted for as a result of fires, and this is reflected in the final number," - said Deputy Police Commissioner Kieran Walshe.
Overestimation of the number of deaths was also connected with the problematic identification of the dead. "In some cases it was found that the remains belonged to one person, while initially it was thought that two or more", - explained the representative of the police. In addition, the expert of the remains of animals, which also reduced the estimate of the number of victims.
Forest fires, which lasted from 7 to 20 February, covered the states of Victoria and New South Wales. They have become the most deadly in the history of Australia. Previously considered to be the most disastrous fires in 1983, which killed 75 people.
