President of Turkey Abdullah Gul is brought before a court on charges of complicity in embezzling funds from the budget of the Welfare Party in the late 1990's, the publication of Hurriyet.
According to the investigation, Gul and some other senior members of the Welfare Party falsified records of party spending, and thus utaili millions of dollars in cash. The exact amount of stolen money is not called.
In 2004, on charges of involvement in the theft of five years in prison, was sentenced a former Turkish Prime Minister Erbakan Nedzhmettin. Gul served with Erbakane one of his advisers, in 2008, was pardoned. As President Abdullah Gul has legal immunity.
Abdullah Gul was elected to the Turkish Parliament as a candidate of the Islamist Welfare Party twice - in 1991 and 1995, while in 1993 he became deputy chairman of the party. In early 1998, the Welfare Party was accused of undermining the secular constitution and has been banned. On the basis of the Party of the Welfare Party was formed to virtue, which was also banned in 2001.
Together with other politicians Gul formed Justice and Development Party, which won the elections to parliament in 2002. As the candidate of the party Abdullah Gul won the 2007 presidential elections.
