Fiji was excluded from the Pacific Islands Forum.

Decision due in flagrant violation of basic human rights in the country, reported Agence France-Presse, referring to the statement by the Chairman of the Forum Toke Talagi.
"With great regret and disappointment, I confirm the suspension of membership of the military regime in Fiji in the Pacific Islands Forum, which will take effect immediately, from 2 May 2009", - said the Talagi.
Earlier, Prime Minister of Fiji, Frank Bainimarama said that the coming elections in the country will be held no earlier than 2014. The country has entered a state of emergency, imposed restrictions on the media and expanded police powers.
The political crisis in Fiji escalated in early April, after the Court of Appeal ruled that the interim government Bainimaramy, which came to power in a military coup in 2006, was illegal. In response, the President Ratu Josefa Iloilo repealed the existing constitution and cabinet Bainimaramy returned to power.
The President dismissed the judges and court employees. He said that the country is not ready for democracy and it needs a minimum five-year transitional period for implementation of reforms. Many countries expressed concern about going to Fiji and demanded the return to democratic procedures.
Established in 1971, the Pacific Islands Forum (Pacific Islands Forum) - an intergovernmental organization whose purpose is to promote cooperation among independent States in the Pacific and the presentation of their interests. It is composed of Australia, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Cook Islands, Palau, Papua - New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Micronesia and Fiji.
