President of Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAEK) Alexander Mashkevich and other members of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) met in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Bertone Tarchizio.
During his meeting with Berlusconi WJC representatives thank the Prime Minister of Italy for its participation in the fight against international terrorism and the principled stand in the peaceful settlement of the Middle East conflict.
Alexander Mashkevich called the constructive approach of Italy to the organization and conduct of UN Conference Against Racism, known as the "Durban 2". It should be noted that Italy was the first European country, which had declared to boycott the conference in Geneva, also refused to attend the United States and Israel.
At a meeting with Cardinal Tarchizio members of the WJC discussed various aspects of relations between Catholics and Jews. "The meeting with Bertone Tarchizio and Silvio Berlusconi gives a good opportunity for future joint initiatives and the strengthening of relations between the Vatican, Italy and the Jewish world. We are pleased that in Rome, we have strong allies," - said Alexander Mashkevich reporters following a meeting.
