Volume of industrial production in the euro area in March 2009 decreased by 20.2 percent over the same period a year earlier. Such data are presented in the report of European statistical agency Eurostat. Compared with February this year, declining production of two percent.
The largest decline was recorded in the energy and the production of durable goods. Reducing these figures as compared to February 2009 amounted to 2.8 and 2.5 percent respectively. The decline in production of capital goods reached 0.5 percent. Compared with March 2008 production of energy, durable goods and capital goods amounted to 9.2, 23.2 and 23.5 percent respectively.
Industrial production in the European Union in March of this year declined by 18.8 percent over the same period a year earlier. Compared with February 2009, a decrease rate was 1.9 percent. In the five countries - EU members recorded an increase of production volume. The largest increase in this index in March was in Portugal (3.1 percent) and Finland (2.2 percent).
As a result of the global crisis, demand for commodities around the world plummeted, resulting in lower production volumes in most countries. Industrial production in Russia in March 2009 decreased by 13.7 percent over the same period a year earlier. In doing so, compared with February this year rose to 11.1 percent. In the first quarter of 2009, a decrease of production in the country reached 14.3 percent.
