This step was taken on the results of the referendum held in November 2008, when most inhabitants of the world's largest island expressed support for greater autonomy from Denmark.
The new legal order implies a shift of Greenland police and courts to the jurisdiction of local government. Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) becomes official, as citizens of the country will be characterized by international law as a separate nation. At the same time, defense and foreign policy will continue to engage in formal Copenhagen.
Denmark controls Greenland for the past three centuries. In 1979, the colony was granted limited sovereignty.
Greenland has large reserves of oil, gas, gold and diamonds. While these resources are not available for development because of the ice that covers much of the island, global warming may facilitate this task. Supporters of independence Greenland expect that the growth of revenues from mineral resources will provide a final separation ostorova from Denmark.
Now Greenland, the majority of people who are Inuit (Eskimos), is heavily dependent on subsidies from the Danish budget, which provides up to 30 per cent of GDP island.
