The Election Commission of Afghanistan issued a final list of candidates for President. According to Reuters, it went down 41 people.
Observers inside and outside of it believe that the current head of state Hamid Karzai has a greater chance to preserve his position. He expressed his support for the leaders of many tribal communities, while his opponents have failed to agree on nominating a single candidate.
Karzai's main competitors are former members of his government - Abdullah Abdullah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ashraf Ghani, who directed the Ministry of Finance. Among presidential candidates, there are several former officials of higher rank and MPs. Note that the list came two women.
Karzai was the head of the Afghan National Authority since 2001, when an international coalition overthrew the Taliban regime. In 2004 he won the first presidential election.
The campaign begins on Monday, June 15. Elections will be held on 20 August. Their organization is engaged in the UN, and finance them primarily to those countries whose troops are deployed in Afghanistan. They spent by the 223 million dollars.
