Viktor Yushchenko met with head of the Catholic Church.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko met with head of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI in the one-day official visit to the Vatican on Monday, June 1, the press service of President of Ukraine.
After an audience with the head of the church Yushchenko met with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Bertone Tarchizio.
During the meeting with Cardinal Yushchenko discussed bilateral relations and Ukraine Vatican. Yushchenko said that the first Mission of Ukraine to the Holy See opened 90 years ago. Viktor Yushchenko thanked the Vatican for support of Ukrainian course towards integration into Europe.
Note that about 15 percent of Ukraine's population are Catholics. Russian Orthodox Church has accused the Catholic Church in the persecution of the Orthodox in Ukraine.
