Reported that Hossein Mousavi could be serious competition for the current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, represents conservatives and radical Islamists.
Moussaoui himself in the past was known as an advocate of strict Islamic rule, and may thus delay a part of the conservative electorate. Nevertheless, it is expected that the upcoming elections, he will speak as a representative of reformists.
Previously, the nomination of their candidates in the presidential election had two other prominent representative of the reformist camp: Mahhamad Khatami, former president (Mohammad Khatami), and former Parliament Speaker Mahdi Karroubi (Mahdi Karroubi).
Nevertheless, as noted by some observers, the chances of reform, not only to win but to participate in the elections so far difficult to assess. Under the Iranian constitution, all candidates must be approved by the Council of Guardians, which are traditionally heavily influenced conservatives.
Mir Hossein Mousavi served as prime minister from 1981 to 1989, during the Iran-Iraq war. He was the last prime minister: in 1989 during the constitutional reform of the prime minister's post was abolished.
