Official diplomatic relations between Syria and Lebanon were established in October 2008. Prior to that, for almost 60 years since the two states gained independence from France, the diplomatic relations between them did not exist.
In doing so, Syria has been actively involved in Lebanese politics. In 1976, a year after the outbreak of civil war in Lebanon, Syria has introduced its troops there who were in the country for nearly 30 years and left only in 2005.
Reported that after the agreement in October 2008, Syria has opened its embassy in Beirut, but has not yet been identified candidate its ambassador in Lebanon. Lebanese Ambassador in Damascus, appointed Michel al-Kur (Michel el-Khour), which had previously served as ambassador to Cyprus.
Despite the establishment of diplomatic ties, relations between Syria and Lebanon remained difficult. The sticking point is the question of the assassination of popular Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri, who died in February 2005 as a result of the terrorist attack.
Many in Lebanon believe that the assassination of the Syrian secret service stand. Damascus has repeatedly denied those accusations. 1 March 2009 in The Hague was established the International Tribunal to investigate Hariri's murder, organized in accordance with UN resolutions.
