In his letter to Congress, Obama pointed to the need for the measure, citing the fact that "the actions and policies of the Government of Iran are contrary to U.S. interests in the region." Under United States law, the President is required to annually renew formal sanctions imposed earlier, otherwise they will stop automatically.
Obama extended the sanctions were imposed in 1995, the administration of President Bill Clinton in connection with the allegations against Iran that the country supports terrorism and is developing weapons of mass destruction. They forbid American companies to contribute to the development of Iranian oil industry, impose restrictions on trade and investment in Iran. For the first time, sanctions against Iran have entered the U.S. in 1979 and since then they have regularly extended and expanded.
Recall the main reason for sanctions against Iran are carried out there working on the development of nuclear technology. International observers believe that Iran's uranium enrichment program is aimed at building nuclear weapons, but Tehran's pledges peaceful use of nuclear technology.
