British justice has acknowledged misleading accusation of rape and murder, which was convicted and spent 27 years in prison Hodzhcon Sean (Sean Hodgson). The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction and released him to freedom. Exculpatory evidence had been obtained through the convict DNA preserved in the evidence, reports Sky News.
The police said that investigation of the murder, which occurred almost 30 years ago, will resume, and search of the killers will continue. In doing so, according to police, will use the latest achievements of science.
Hodgson was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1982 for the rape and murder of 22-year-old barmaid Theresa De Simone (Teresa De Simone), whose body was found in her car in December 1979. The examination found that the girl was strangled by a gold chain on which she wore a crucifix.
One of the evidence in the case were the results of blood killers, a group which coincides with the group accused of blood. In addition, Hodgson gave confessions. The prosecution insisted that the evidence is sufficient to admit him guilty.
However, recent studies conducted with the use of modern methods of DNA analysis showed that semen found at the crime scene did not belong to Hodgson.
As reported by The Guardian, Hodgson suffers from a mental disorder, most of the period he spent in a specialist psychiatric ward. Even at the first trial his defense tried to convince the court and jury that it is pathological liar, and none of his confession is not credible. However, overlapping groups and the recognition of the defendant's blood was enough to make a life sentence.
The publication notes that after the liberation of Hodgson would be entitled to compensation, which may number in the hundreds of thousands of pounds.
In Britain, another well known case of cancellation of the sentence and the release of the convicted person after such a long detention. In 2002, freedom came Stephen Downing (Stephen Downing), who spent 27 years in prison on charges of murdering 32-year-old typist Wendy Syuell (Wendy Sewell). He first found the woman beaten when Syuell was still alive, and his clothes were a lot of spots of blood. The sentence a mentally retarded young man with the development of 11-year-old child, who in the murder of the year was 17 years old, made on the basis of expertise and his own recognition of the act.
