France returns to the command structure of NATO.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, speaking on 11 March before the Supreme Military Academy cadets in Paris, said that after a break of 43 years for France, "the time has come" to return to the command structures of NATO, transmits radio France Info.

According to Nicolas Sarkozy, this step is necessary for national security and the protection of French interests. "France will become stronger and more influential," - said the French president.

In doing so, Sarkozy said that despite the return to the command structure of the alliance, France will maintain the freedom and independence in the disposition of its nuclear capabilities, and sending its troops to participate in joint military operations.

At the moment, as pointed out by Sarkozy, France, as a NATO member, does not take any command post. "We can not say his words, when the Allies determine military objectives and means of achieving them", - the president said.

"Having completed this process [of full integration into NATO - lenta.ru], France will become stronger and more influential. Why? Because there is no always wrong. So that France should be involved in the management, not just obey," - concluded Sarkozy.

Recall that France withdrew from NATO's command structures of 7 March 1966 by a decision of the founder of the Fifth Republic, General Charles de Gaulle. De Gaulle did not satisfy the dominance of the U.S. alliance.

In addition, while facing the United States and the Soviet general would not want to associate themselves with one camp believing that France is to elect a "third way" and maintain their own independent and more flexible foreign policy.

Meanwhile, after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the collapse of the Soviet foreign policy realities have changed, and France began moving closer to NATO. The incentive to cooperate closely as the Gulf War and the settlement of the military conflict in the Balkans.

Currently, France has participated in all military operations of NATO and is ranked fourth in the number of deployed troops and logistical resources.
